Cooperative Learning Elements
- Positive Interdependence: Each group will consist of 4 to 5 group members that will each have a very specific role in creating the commercial.
- Director: ensures that every group members’ ideas are heard. Keeps the the group on track to finish the project by the due date. Contacts the teacher with questions on behalf of the group.
- Screenwriter: documents everyone’s ideas and create the script and storyboard for the commercial. This student is also the “spy” of the group and can look at what other groups are doing to see if their commercial is up to par.
- Videographer: in charge of filming and editing the commercial. Also makes casting decisions. In groups of 5, there can be two videographers.
- Skeptic: questions the group to ensure their understanding of the material. Asks group members if they can explain their reasoning behind decisions and provide justification. This person is also in charge of writing the 1 to 2 page explanation of the video.

- Individual and Group Accountability: each group member’s opinions will be heard and incorporated into the video. The write up will also demonstrate the group’s understanding of the content. Group members will also be asked to fill out an evaluation of their efforts as well as the effort of the other group members.
- Group Processing: groups must complete their commercial by the date it is due and the director will ensure that this happens and will make adjustments if the group is off track. The skeptic is also allowed to look at what other groups are doing to make sure that their commercial can compete with the other commercials.
- Social Skills: this project will require students to practice their communication skills in order for the commercial to run smoothly. Students must also trust that their group members will get their job done and remedy conflicts as they arise. Students will also be able to practice their decision making strategies when determining what information goes into the commercial and how the final commercial will look.
- Face-to-Face Interaction: students must discuss the information they are learning in order to create an impactful commercial. Students must work together and help each other out in order to be successful.
- Specific Task: students must choose at least one of the statistical elements learned during the unit to incorporate into their commercial as well as use persuasive rhetoric. Students are asked to create a short (2 to 5 minutes) PSA that will inform the entire school about the negative body image portrayed in the media.
