In this cooperative learning opportunity, students will be taking the information they gathered throughout the unit regarding body image and how men and women are portraying in the media and creating a PSA or commercial that will be shown to the whole school. Students will also provide a 1 to 2 page write up explaining some of their decisions and reasoning behind the content of their video.
Student Instructions:
In your groups that we have been working for this unit, you will be creating a PSA (Public Service Announcement) or a commercial to inform the rest of the school about how the media impacts personal body image. Your commercial must be at least 1 minutes long, but cannot exceed 5 minutes.
Your commercial must have following:
We will spend one day viewing each video and then voting on which commercial will be shown to the whole school.
Your commercial must have following:
- At least 1 piece of statistical evidence of how the media affects body image (we generated graphs and charts throughout this unit, you may use any of these).
- Within the first two days of the project, you must have a completed storyboard approved by the teacher. You must also post this storyboard to the class forum and get peer feedback. Each member of your group must comment on at least 2 other groups’ storyboards. You will use the rubric for this assignment to help you provide meaningful feedback to your peers.
- Before you begin filming, you must have a completed script turned into the teacher.
We will spend one day viewing each video and then voting on which commercial will be shown to the whole school.
Group Roles
- Director: ensures that every group members’ ideas are heard. Keeps the the group on track to finish the project by the due date. Contacts the teacher with questions on behalf of the group.
- Screenwriter: documents everyone’s ideas and create the script and storyboard for the commercial. This student is also the “spy” of the group and can look at what other groups are doing to see if their commercial is up to par.
- Videographer: in charge of filming and editing the commercial. Also makes casting decisions. In groups of 5, there can be two videographers.
- Skeptic: questions the group to ensure their understanding of the material. Asks group members if they can explain their reasoning behind decisions and provide justification. This person is also in charge of writing the 1 to 2 page explanation of the video.
Teacher Instructions
- We will hand out the Activity instructions for students to each group. We will read through the instructions together and address any student questions. We will also explain the group roles during this time so students know each member's responsibilities.
- We will explain how students can access Chromebooks and cameras and explain the rules for using this equipment.
- We will show example PSAs (linked in the materials) so students have a better understanding of what we are looking for with this project.
- We will show students the rubric so they know what is expected of them when completing this project.
- Students will be asked to assign their group member roles and begin working on the storyboard for their PSA.
- Students will post their PSA to the forum and comment on at least 2 groups’ PSA storyboard.
- After we have approved their storyboard and they have received peer feedback on the forum, students will begin constructing a script.
- Once we have approved the group’s script, students will be able to begin filming their PSA.
- After each student has turned in their PSA, we will watch each video in class and students will be able to vote on the video they believe should be shown to the entire school.
- Once the video is chosen, it will be shown in place of morning announcements one day so that the entire school can view the PSA.
